In Banda Aceh, Indonesia, a couple received 140 lashes each for violating Sharia law by engaging in sex outside marriage and consuming alcohol. This public caning, witnessed by dozens, was conducted by sharia police, marking one of the highest punishments since Sharia was implemented in Aceh. The couple’s punishment included 100 lashes for their sexual relations and 40 for drinking alcohol. Sharia law, which enforces strict moral codes, has strong local support and includes penalties for various offenses.
