The opening date for the Gordie Howe International Bridge, linking Windsor, Ont., and Detroit, Mich., has been delayed to early 2026, raising concerns over its significance as an economic lifeline. Over 200 Canadian border staff are being hired and trained for the crossing, currently working at other locations, while the project’s cost has increased to $6.4 billion. CBSA’s Stephanie Robichaud is optimistic about the readiness of the staff for the bridge’s launch. Staff are eager for a confirmed opening date, emphasizing the vital role they will play in border enforcement.
