Lululemon has launched its Like New resale program in Canada, expanding its presence in the growing second-hand market. The Vancouver-based athletic wear company partnered with Tersus Solutions to manage a new 25,000-square-foot processing hub in Calgary, where returned and used items will be cleaned and prepared for resale. Customers can buy and sell pre-owned Lululemon products through the platform, which offers 70 percent of the sale price in cash or 90 percent in store credit. This initiative aligns Lululemon with other major brands like Canada Goose and Arc’teryx, which are also entering the resale space to enhance customer loyalty and promote sustainability. Since its launch, Tersus has reported processing between 1,000 and 1,500 items daily, indicating strong interest in the resale market.
Why It Matters
The rise of resale programs among major retailers like Lululemon reflects a significant shift in consumer behavior toward sustainable shopping practices. A DIG360/Angus Reid Institute study found that 77 percent of Canadians purchased pre-owned items in the past year, highlighting the mainstream acceptance of second-hand shopping. Retailers are increasingly incorporating resale into their business models as a strategic move to recapture value from used goods, which can also help attract budget-conscious consumers amid economic pressures. This trend underscores a broader commitment to sustainability in the fashion industry, as brands seek to extend the lifecycle of their products.
