Ford government to remove and reconfigure Toronto bike lanes after court ruling

The Ford government has announced plans to remove and reconfigure bike lanes on several of Toronto’s busiest roads, including Bloor Street, Yonge Street, and University Avenue. The province aims to restore motor vehicle lanes previously taken over by bike lanes, with immediate work starting on a 600-metre section of Bloor Street West. Additionally, the government has issued a request for proposals to study design options for restoring vehicle lanes on various key streets. This decision follows a recent Ontario Court of Appeal ruling that allows the province to remove 19 kilometers of protected bike lanes in Toronto, a reversal of a lower court’s decision. Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria stated that the bike lanes are contributing to traffic congestion and that restoring vehicle lanes is essential for alleviating gridlock.

Why It Matters

The decision to remove bike lanes comes amidst ongoing debates over urban transportation and infrastructure in Toronto. Historical data indicates that bike lanes often enhance safety for cyclists and can reduce vehicle congestion when properly integrated into traffic systems. However, internal documents from the Transportation Ministry highlight concerns that removing these lanes could increase collisions by more than 50% and may not significantly alleviate traffic congestion, raising questions about the effectiveness of this policy change. The outcome of this initiative could have lasting implications for urban mobility, cyclist safety, and local business dynamics in Toronto.
