The WNBA has scheduled an expansion draft for its new franchises, the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo, on April 3. A coin toss on Friday will determine which team can choose between the first pick in the expansion draft or the sixth pick in the college draft set for April 13. The expansion draft will consist of two rounds, with each team allowed to make up to six selections, alternating picks between rounds. Existing teams must submit a list of five protected players by Sunday, allowing new teams to select from unprotected players, with a limit of one selection per existing franchise. Additionally, both expansion teams can negotiate supermax contracts worth up to $1.4 million annually for potential unrestricted free agents.
Why It Matters
The expansion draft is significant as it marks the WNBA’s continued growth, with Portland and Toronto becoming its latest additions, following Golden State’s entry last year. This expansion reflects the league’s successful efforts to broaden its reach and enhance competitive balance, having recently ratified a new collective bargaining agreement that supports player contracts. The ability for new teams to negotiate lucrative contracts with high-profile players is a crucial aspect of attracting talent and elevating the league’s overall competitiveness. This move also underscores the WNBA’s commitment to strengthening its market presence and fan engagement in diverse regions.
