Winnipeg launches new professional soccer team for women and men

A new women’s professional soccer team is set to launch in Winnipeg, following the dissolution of the city’s men’s team just a year ago. Co-founded by Desiree Scott, a retired Winnipeg midfielder and Olympic gold medallist, and Rob Gale, former coach of Valour FC, the team is part of the Northern Super League. The announcement was made at a press conference, which included Christina Litz, the league president. The team, which has a 30% local ownership stake, is expected to play at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex next year, pending funding approval for facility upgrades. Despite the challenges posed by the previous men’s team folding after seven seasons, the founders are optimistic about the potential for women’s soccer in the region, especially with a growing interest in women’s sports.

Why It Matters

The establishment of the women’s soccer team in Winnipeg highlights the increasing demand and support for women’s sports, which has seen significant growth in recent years. The Northern Super League, initiated in 2024, aims to provide a platform for female athletes, giving them professional opportunities previously unavailable in Canada. With a smaller population base compared to other markets, the team’s success will depend on community engagement and support, especially following the departure of Valour FC. The financial viability of women’s sports franchises is bolstered by lower ticket prices and a diverse fan base, which can help attract new audiences that may not traditionally engage with men’s sports.
