A drug trafficking investigation initiated by the Windsor Police Service has led to one of Ontario’s largest drug seizures, according to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). The operation, which involved collaboration between multiple law enforcement agencies in Canada and the U.S., resulted in the confiscation of nearly 1.7 tonnes of drugs, including cocaine, methamphetamine, and opium, with a street value exceeding $139 million. A total of 21 individuals have been charged with 102 offenses under the Criminal Code and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, with 19 arrests made and two suspects still at large. The investigation, launched in January 2025, revealed the use of a broker-style model for transporting illegal drugs within legitimate supply chains. Multiple search warrants were executed in various locations, leading to significant seizures of drugs, firearms, cash, and other related items.

Why It Matters

This drug seizure highlights the ongoing challenges posed by cross-border drug trafficking in Canada and the U.S. The collaboration among various law enforcement agencies, including the Canada Border Services Agency and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, underscores the complexity and scale of organized crime networks operating across borders. Historical data shows that drug trafficking remains a significant issue in Canada, contributing to violence and public health crises. The sheer volume of drugs seized in this operation reflects the increasing sophistication of trafficking methods and the persistent demand for illicit drugs in North America.
