Over 70 hikers evacuated from West Coast Trail due to heavy rains

Two days into a long-awaited hike on Vancouver Island’s West Coast Trail, Patrick Laprise, along with his 15-year-old son and a friend, found themselves evacuated due to severe weather conditions. Heavy rains rendered portions of the 75-kilometer trail “impassable,” prompting rescue efforts for over 70 hikers since Sunday. Laprise’s group struggled through knee-deep mud and swollen creeks, ultimately reaching an evacuation point at the Crab Shack restaurant. The owners, Carl and Shelley Edgar, have seen unprecedented storm conditions and are working to assist stranded hikers. Parks Canada has advised against river crossings, leading to numerous cancellations and modifications of hiking plans, putting additional pressure on local businesses that support trail access.

Why It Matters

The West Coast Trail is a popular destination for thousands of hikers annually, requiring months of advance booking. Severe weather patterns, including intense rainfall, have raised safety concerns and disrupted tourism. The current flooding conditions reflect broader climate trends that may increasingly affect outdoor recreational activities. This situation underscores the vulnerability of outdoor tourism to extreme weather events, impacting local economies and recreational safety.
