Victim Services Toronto expands Ask for Angela safety campaign before World Cup

A Toronto charity, Victim Services Toronto, is enhancing its “Ask for Angela” safety initiative to support survivors of gender-based violence ahead of the FIFA World Cup, which will bring tens of thousands of visitors to the city. The initiative, which originated in the UK and was launched in the Greater Toronto Area this year, enables individuals to discreetly request assistance by asking if “Angela” is present at participating locations. With the World Cup set to feature six games starting in June, the charity is focusing on creating safe spaces in anticipation of increased incidents of violence associated with large events. The program is expanding to over 225 retail locations, including major chains, with plans to train an additional 8,000 staff across various sectors. This initiative aims to connect victims with trauma-informed support and will also feature a new mapping tool and an advertising campaign to increase visibility.

Why It Matters

Victim Services Toronto’s initiative is particularly relevant as major sporting events have been linked to spikes in gender-based violence and human trafficking. Historical data indicates that the combination of heightened excitement, alcohol consumption, and large crowds can create dangerous environments for vulnerable individuals. By expanding support networks and educating staff across numerous sectors, the organization aims to provide essential help during a time when victims may have limited opportunities to seek assistance. This proactive approach is crucial for addressing the challenges faced by those experiencing violence and exploitation during large public gatherings.
