Judge to rule on transfer of trans inmate to women’s prison

Amanda Joy Cooper, designated as a dangerous offender, argues that her gender identity aligns with her physical state and that remaining in a men’s prison jeopardizes her safety. The case is set for a Federal Court hearing, amid ongoing debates about the safety of transgender individuals in correctional facilities. Since 2017, Correctional Service Canada has received 129 transfer requests from natal males to women’s institutions, with 35 approved.
