Toronto Maple Leafs fire general manager Brad Treliving

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment has announced the departure of Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving. The decision was communicated by MLSE President Keith Pelley in a news release prior to the team’s game against Anaheim. Pelley emphasized that the organization is focused on achieving a Stanley Cup championship and concluded that a new leadership direction was necessary. Treliving, who took over the GM role on May 31, 2023, replacing Kyle Dubas, had a record of 139 wins, 92 losses, and 27 overtime losses, including a playoff record of 10-10 and a first-round series victory against the Ottawa Senators. Before joining the Maple Leafs, Treliving spent nine seasons as the GM of the Calgary Flames and previously held positions with the Arizona Coyotes.

Why It Matters

This change marks a significant moment for the Toronto Maple Leafs, a storied franchise that has not won the Stanley Cup since 1967. Treliving’s tenure, which lasted less than a year, was characterized by mixed results, including a playoff appearance but ultimately falling short of the franchise’s championship aspirations. The decision to part ways with Treliving underscores the urgency within the organization to improve performance, especially as the team faces elimination from playoff contention. Historically, the Maple Leafs have a challenging playoff history, adding pressure to leadership changes as they seek to break a long-standing championship drought.
