Cemetery Refuses Muslim Burial for Niagara Woman’s Family

The family of Alina Masud, an 18-year-old who died in a car accident, was denied burial in Lakeview Cemetery in Thorold, Ont., due to the cemetery’s inability to accommodate Muslim traditions, according to Imam Asad Mahmood. Despite prior discussions, Thorold councillors rejected the request for a Muslim section, citing a motion passed in 2023 that restricts grave sales. Mahmood and local supporters are holding a vigil to advocate for Muslim burial rights, emphasizing the need for community accommodation. MPP Jeff Burch expressed hope for better consideration of the Muslim community’s burial needs in the future.
