Ten residents from Toronto are among 80 members of the Isha Foundation unaccounted for following devastating flash floods in Nepal. Leslie Crespi, a representative of the foundation, confirmed that the group was on a trek returning from the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a sacred pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet. The floods struck shortly after the group arrived at a Chinese immigration center, leaving families in shock as communication has ceased since the disaster. Community leaders in Mississauga are coordinating efforts to locate missing loved ones and are seeking assistance from the Canadian government. Global Affairs Canada confirmed awareness of about 30 missing Canadians and is working to establish contact with them amid challenging conditions in the region.

Why It Matters

The flash flooding in Nepal has resulted in significant loss of life and widespread destruction, with reports indicating at least 359 deaths and over 1,000 individuals still missing. The Isha Foundation’s pilgrimage is significant to multiple religious communities, making the potential loss particularly impactful. The Canadian government is actively involved in rescue efforts, deploying consular officials to provide support. The incident highlights the risks faced by travelers in disaster-prone regions and the importance of international assistance during emergencies.
