This week, System76 launched the stable release of its Rust-based COSMIC desktop environment, which is included in Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS, based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Unlike previous versions that utilized GNOME, COSMIC is a new desktop environment designed to maintain a familiar interface while enhancing user experience, replacing several GNOME applications with COSMIC alternatives. System76’s founder, Carl Richell, emphasized the need for innovation after recognizing the limitations of their previous systems. The launch marks a significant milestone in their 20-year history of shipping Linux computers and developing the Pop!_OS distribution.
