Northern B.C. community offers free 23-year-old toilets with conditions

The community of Port Edward, located south of Prince Rupert in northwest British Columbia, is distributing free low-flush toilets to residents on a first-come, first-served basis. The toilets have been stored in the district office’s basement for nearly two decades, remnants of a water conservation initiative from 2003. Tyson Schofield, the district’s chief administrative officer, initiated the giveaway after discovering the unused toilets and recognizing that they needed to be put to use. The program was announced on social media with a humorous promotional image featuring Oprah Winfrey, and by the next day, 18 toilets had already been claimed. Schofield noted that the toilets, while over 20 years old, had recently been tested in the district office and functioned properly.

Why It Matters

This initiative highlights the importance of resource management within small communities, especially regarding water conservation efforts. Port Edward’s 2003 program aimed to reduce water usage to secure funding for a water treatment plant reconstruction. By redistributing these low-flush toilets, the district addresses both environmental concerns and local needs. The move also showcases how municipalities can repurpose unused assets effectively while promoting sustainable practices.
