What You Need to Know
• NASA is launching the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at 7:26 a.m. ET.
• The telescope will help scientists investigate dark matter, dark energy, and other cosmic mysteries.
• The launch will occur from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.

NASA is set to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at 7:26 a.m. ET from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This new space telescope aims to enhance our understanding of dark matter and dark energy, key components of the universe’s structure. The telescope, roughly the size of a tour bus, will be deployed aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, with a 50% chance of favorable weather conditions for the launch. If conditions are not suitable, a backup launch window is available on Monday, October 30, 2023, at 7:22 a.m. ET, with a 30% chance of weather interference. The telescope is named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief astronomer, and is designed to have a field of view at least 100 times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope.

Why It Matters

The launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is significant as it represents a major advancement in astronomical research capabilities. Named after a pioneering figure in space science, the telescope will operate at the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point, known as L2, approximately one million miles from Earth. This location allows for a stable orbit with minimal fuel consumption, similar to the James Webb Space Telescope. The Roman Space Telescope’s enhanced field of view will enable it to capture vast areas of the sky, facilitating groundbreaking discoveries in our understanding of the universe’s composition and evolution.
