Vanessa Collias, a 27-year-old Toronto woman, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for 18 years after pleading guilty to the second-degree murders of her two young sons, Dimitri and Yiannis, whom she suffocated in December 2023. Following the death of her husband, Collias expressed feelings of isolation and sought to reunite her family in death. After the murders, she attempted suicide, resulting in her becoming a paraplegic. A psychiatric report noted her grief but stated she did not suffer from a major mental disorder that would absolve her of responsibility for her actions.
