In response to a recent assault of a child at Darwin School in Winnipeg, Manitoba’s Premier Wab Kinew announced that all schools must conduct safety reviews and submit emergency response plans to the Department of Education by December 25. The assailant, a registered sex offender, has been charged with assault after hiding in a school bathroom. Kinew emphasized the need for improved safety measures, including locked doors and better communication regarding sex offenders. The provincial government is allocating $500,000 for training and is convening a forum to enhance school safety practices across the province.
