Shafi Amani, an Afghan immigrant living in Alexandria, VA, runs a food truck called “Seven Guys, Halal food.” He recounts his dangerous journey to the U.S. through Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Mexico. Recently, we visited his family in their high-rise apartment, where they live with their newborn son Khyber, daughter Iqra, and 4-year-old daughter Yousra, who is now wheelchair-bound and struggling with health issues. Shafi named Iqra as a statement against the Taliban’s ban on educating girls.
