The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has confirmed that it is currently facing a cyber attack on its networks. However, it maintains that the attack is not considered a security threat at this time.
“The situation is developing rapidly, but as of now, there is no impact on RCMP operations and no known threat to the safety and security of Canadians,” stated the RCMP in a communication to CityNews.
Furthermore, the RCMP has stated that there are currently no known impacts on safety and security partners in Canada or internationally.
Despite the cyber attack, the RCMP’s website is fully functional and operational.
As of now, the motives behind the attack remain unclear, and a criminal investigation is currently underway.
While the breach is described as “alarming” by the RCMP, they have highlighted that the quick response and mitigation strategies implemented show the significant measures taken by the RCMP to detect and prevent such threats.
However, the RCMP acknowledges that the full extent and nature of the breach are still unknown, and the responsible party has not been identified at this point.
