Proposed changes to endangered species law criticized by scientist

Five former chairs of the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) have expressed serious concerns over proposed amendments to the Species At Risk Act, warning that these changes could lead to the “wilful extinction” of endangered species in Canada. The act currently protects over 600 species, and the scientists claim that the government’s plans would undermine its effectiveness. They argue that proposed measures, including the ability to fast-track project approvals and exempt certain projects from essential “jeopardy tests” that assess risks to endangered species, could severely harm critical habitats. The letter, which was made public to raise awareness among Canadians, comes as the Carney government is considering significant changes to environmental regulations, including those related to a controversial West Coast pipeline project that threatens local wildlife, notably the southern resident killer whale and Chinook salmon.

Why It Matters

The Species At Risk Act was established to protect endangered species and their habitats in Canada, reflecting a commitment to biodiversity. The proposed changes, particularly the ability to bypass protective assessments for projects deemed in the national interest, could set a troubling precedent for environmental governance. This situation is compounded by ongoing concerns over habitat destruction caused by industrial development, as seen with the West Coast pipeline, which could significantly impact vulnerable species. Historical data shows that habitat loss is one of the leading causes of species extinction, underscoring the need for stringent protective measures to ensure the survival of at-risk wildlife.
