Residents ordered to evacuate as glacial lake near Pemberton threatens to burst

People in a small community near Pemberton, B.C., have been ordered to evacuate immediately due to the risk of flooding from a nearby glacial lake. The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District issued the evacuation order on Thursday for approximately two dozen properties in the Poole Creek and Gates Lake area of Birken, located about 30 kilometers northwest of Pemberton. The RCMP will assist with the evacuation process. The threat stems from the melting Place Glacier, which has created a lake that has reached concerning depths. Monitoring sensors indicated that once the lake reached 30 meters deep, an evacuation order would be triggered. The affected properties had been on alert since June 7, when the lake reached 24 meters, a level previously associated with significant flooding events in past years.

Why It Matters

The evacuation highlights ongoing concerns regarding glacial melting and its impact on surrounding communities. Historical data indicates that significant outburst floods occurred from the same glacial lake in 2024 and 2025, releasing large volumes of water and debris into nearby areas. These incidents underscore the potential dangers posed by glacial melt, particularly as climate change accelerates glacier retreat. Continuous monitoring of glacial lakes is crucial for public safety, especially in regions where communities are at risk from sudden flooding events.
