A person died after being hit by a freight train at a pedestrian crossing in Invercargill near Elles Rd, with emergency services responding to the scene. The incident occurred at the Ness St crossing, and the train was only carrying coal at the time, with the train driver receiving support. This is the second pedestrian fatality involving a train in a week, following the death of 13-year-old Sarie Morton near Matamata College.
