Tauranga kiwifruit orchard to be cleared for Pyes Pa subdivision

A Tauranga kiwifruit orchard is set to be cleared to facilitate a new 75-home subdivision. Classic Group has acquired the orchard located at the end of Inverness Drive in Pyes Pa and intends to submit a resource consent application to the Tauranga City Council for the subdivision. Peter Cooney, a director at Classic Group, described this development as the “last piece of the puzzle” following the company’s earlier development of 30 hectares adjacent to the site in the early 2000s. Earthworks for the 5 to 6-hectare orchard are expected to commence in September or October after the current crop is harvested and the kiwifruit vines are removed.

Why It Matters

This subdivision marks a significant shift in land use from agricultural to residential development in Tauranga, reflecting broader trends in urban expansion and housing demand. The region has seen substantial growth over the years, with various developments catering to the increasing population. The transition from agricultural land to residential housing may raise concerns regarding food production and local ecosystems, as well as highlight the need for balanced urban planning that accommodates housing while preserving agricultural resources. This change underscores the ongoing challenges cities face in managing growth while ensuring sustainable land use.
