Ottawa and partners invest $10 million in commercial spaceport project

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, along with the federal government and NordSpace, has announced a $10 million investment to develop a commercial spaceport on Newfoundland’s Burin Peninsula. The Atlantic Spaceport Complex, planned to be located in St. Lawrence, aims to become Canada’s first operational orbital spaceport. The federal government is contributing $1 million through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, while Newfoundland and Labrador is providing $4 million, consisting of a $1 million term loan and a $3 million forgivable loan aimed at creating 100 permanent jobs by 2033. NordSpace will invest $5 million into the project. This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance Canada’s space capabilities, as the country currently relies on external nations for space launches.

Why It Matters

This investment reflects Canada’s strategic move to bolster its domestic space industry and reduce reliance on foreign launch services. The Canadian Space Launch Act, recently introduced, aims to establish a regulatory framework for space activities, underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing its space sector. Historically, Canada has primarily depended on the United States for launching civilian and military payloads into orbit. This new spaceport initiative not only seeks to create jobs but also aims to position Canada as a competitive player in the rapidly evolving global space market.
