Newfoundland and Labrador implement fire ban across the province

Forestry Minister Pleaman Forsey has implemented a fire ban across Newfoundland and Labrador due to high Fire Weather Index ratings and significant wildfire activity in Labrador. The ban, effective immediately, will remain in place until at least July 17. All burning permits for grass, brush, or other materials are revoked, and the use of fireworks and sky lanterns is prohibited. Campfires and wood-fueled fires in backyards are also banned. However, gas or propane-fueled units, such as barbecues, can be used safely, along with smoker units for food preservation. Users of all-terrain and motorized vehicles are reminded to equip their vehicles with appropriate fire safety tools, including a fire extinguisher.

Why It Matters

This fire ban is a critical response to rising fire risks and ongoing wildfires, which pose threats to both the environment and public safety. Historically, Newfoundland and Labrador have experienced severe wildfires during dry seasons, making timely interventions essential. The province’s proactive measures, such as banning outdoor burning and enhancing vehicle safety, aim to mitigate the risks associated with wildfires. These actions are particularly vital given the increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires in many regions, which have been linked to climate change and shifting weather patterns.
