Trust undermined as Innu face harm from government response to exhibit dispute

A group of seven anthropologists and archaeologists from Memorial University have voiced their support for the Innu Nation in Labrador, urging the provincial government to clarify its claims regarding Innu history. In a letter sent to Innu Nation leaders, they expressed concern over allegations that the Innu were instructed to remove or modify historical references for the Innu Pakassiun exhibit at the Labrador Interpretation Centre. The researchers argue that the archaeological evidence does not support a narrative that limits Innu presence to the 1700s, and they criticize the actions of The Rooms and the Provincial Archaeology Office for undermining public trust and failing to engage respectfully with Indigenous communities. The exhibit, intended to be led by the Innu, was recently canceled following disputes over historical context. The anthropologists emphasized that the view of Innu history being confined to a recent timeline reflects a flawed understanding of cultural continuity.

Why It Matters

The controversy surrounding the Innu Pakassiun exhibit highlights ongoing tensions between Indigenous communities and governmental institutions regarding the representation of Indigenous histories and cultures. The Innu have a deep-rooted presence in Labrador, with archaeological evidence indicating their activities in the region long before the 1700s. This situation underscores the critical importance of inclusive practices in archaeology and heritage management, which should honor Indigenous knowledge and perspectives. The reluctance of provincial officials to address the historical timeline further exacerbates mistrust and emphasizes the need for collaborative effort in recognizing and validating Indigenous histories.
