A norovirus outbreak on the Ruby Princess cruise ship, operated by Princess Cruises, has affected over 120 individuals, including passengers and crew members. The ship, which departed San Francisco on June 12 for a 20-day voyage to Canada and Alaska, reported the outbreak to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on June 28. Of the 3,032 passengers, 102 (3.4 percent) reported illness, while 23 of the 1,144 crew members (2 percent) were also affected, primarily experiencing symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting. In response, the CDC and the Vessel Sanitation Program implemented increased cleaning measures and isolated those showing symptoms. The Ruby Princess made a scheduled stop in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, on June 29, before returning to San Francisco on July 2. The ship has since departed for another trip, with plans to stop in Prince Rupert again on July 9.

Why It Matters

Norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships are not uncommon, with the CDC recording 13 such incidents in 2023 alone. This outbreak marks the seventh case of norovirus on cruise ships this year, with three occurring aboard Princess Cruises vessels. Norovirus is highly contagious and spreads rapidly, making it a significant public health concern, especially in confined spaces like cruise ships. The best prevention methods include stringent hygiene practices and immediate responses to outbreaks, underscoring the importance of health protocols in the cruise industry.
