Police chief to publicly address Montréal-Nord racism scandal

Montreal police will provide an update on the Station 39 scandal in the Montréal-Nord borough on Tuesday, following allegations of racial profiling involving 16 officers. Chief Fady Dagher announced the investigation in June, revealing that the officers were being examined for racist and hateful actions against Black and Arab individuals during police stops. The problematic patrol unit was subsequently disbanded after concerns were raised by fellow officers. The public meeting, originally set for July 8 but postponed due to an active shooter situation, will discuss the details of the allegations and the SPVM’s plans for cultural change at the station. The meeting will also allow for public questions after a presentation, which will be streamed online.

Why It Matters

The allegations against the SPVM highlight ongoing issues of systemic racism within law enforcement in Montreal. Data shows that Black individuals are four times more likely to be stopped by police than their white counterparts, while Arab individuals face a fivefold increase in stop rates. Community leaders have called for accountability and reform, emphasizing the need for transparency and direct engagement with affected populations. Previous public discussions on police practices have not led to significant changes, underscoring the urgency for effective measures to combat racial profiling within the police force.
