Mounties are searching for a missing snowmobiler from Whitehorse near the British Columbia-Yukon border. The individual was part of a group of three snowmobilers who ventured out to retrieve a broken snow machine in the Haines Pass area on Friday. At around 4 p.m., he became separated from the others, who returned to the parking lot and awaited his return. His sister reported him missing to the RCMP around 10 p.m. that evening, noting he lacked survival gear and a satellite phone, while harsh weather conditions severely limited visibility. Search-and-rescue teams began operations at daybreak on Saturday, with helicopters deployed during brief clear periods. Authorities from both British Columbia and Yukon are involved in the search, cautioning against public attempts to assist due to the dangers involved.
Why It Matters
This incident highlights the potential dangers of snowmobiling in remote areas, particularly during adverse weather conditions. Snowmobilers often face risks such as becoming lost or stranded, especially when they lack proper equipment. The RCMP’s warning against public searches underscores concerns about safety and resource allocation during emergencies. Historically, similar situations have resulted in additional rescues, complicating efforts to locate individuals in distress.
