Meteorites from a significant fireball event over northern Ontario on June 19 have been successfully recovered on Cockburn Island in Lake Huron. On July 11, Dave Kenny from Vancouver Island and his colleague Anton Clemens, part of the Meteorite Recovery Specialists, found multiple fragments on the largely uninhabited island. The meteor, which weighed several hundred kilograms, broke apart in the atmosphere shortly after 8 p.m. The samples collected were confirmed by the Meteor Physics Group at Western University in London, Ontario. This recovery marked a notable achievement for Kenny, as it was his first meteorite find on Canadian soil. The team faced challenges accessing the island, which is primarily private or protected land, and spent two and a half days searching for meteorites.
