A Markham woman, Joanne Chan, has been sentenced to two years in jail for causing a fatal crash that killed 75-year-old Zarina Malik by running a red light at 80 km/h. Found guilty of dangerous driving causing death, Chan has also been banned from driving in Canada for 15 years. The incident occurred in January 2023 when Chan failed to brake before colliding with Malik’s vehicle, resulting in Malik’s death and injuries to her son, Jason. Chan, who has a history of speeding violations, expressed remorse and has not driven since the collision.
