Marineland has initiated the transfer of a third batch of beluga whales to aquariums outside Canada. A specialized team is moving six whales—two males and four females—using a custom sling for transport to Toronto’s Pearson Airport. From there, they will be flown to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. Marineland, which closed to the public in 2024 and is currently up for sale, cited financial difficulties as a reason for the transfers, stating it can no longer care for the whales. This operation follows previous moves that have seen a total of 19 belugas relocated, with plans to have all remaining whales transferred by the end of the month. The last captive whales and dolphins in Canada, the transfer is crucial for their survival after a failed deal to sell them to a Chinese aquarium was blocked by authorities.
Why It Matters
The situation at Marineland highlights the broader issues surrounding marine mammal captivity in Canada and the ethical concerns of animal welfare. Marineland had previously housed 30 belugas and four dolphins, making it the last facility in Canada to hold such species. The Canadian government intervened to prevent potentially harmful sales, reflecting changing attitudes towards the captivity of marine life. The ongoing transfers to accredited aquariums in the U.S. represent a shift towards rehabilitation and better living conditions for these animals, amidst increasing scrutiny over animal rights and conservation efforts.
