Judge Revokes Citizenship of Guatemalan Massacre Leader
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

OTTAWA — A federal judge revoked the citizenship of Jorge Vinicio Sosa Orantes, a Canadian man implicated in the 1982 Las Dos Erres massacre in Guatemala, where a military unit he led killed 200 villagers. Justice Roger Lafrenière concluded that Sosa lied about his military history when applying for refugee status and citizenship in Canada. The ruling described horrific acts, including torture and murder of civilians, under Sosa’s orders. He was also ordered to pay nearly $250,000 for trial costs, marking a rare but significant legal action against such crimes.
