The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is investigating a collision involving a jet ski and a grey whale near Siwash Rock in Stanley Park, Vancouver. Witnesses reported that the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. PT on Monday, shortly after a jet ski operator sped near the shoreline where the whale was feeding. Richard Savage, a bystander, observed the whale’s surfacing before the collision took place, resulting in the rider being thrown from the watercraft and calling for help. Emergency services transported the individual to the hospital in serious but stable condition. The grey whale has been a frequent sight in the area, attracting crowds, and experts have noted a concerning trend of grey whale deaths in British Columbia, with seven found dead off Vancouver Island this year, likely due to starvation during migration.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding the safety of marine wildlife in busy recreational areas. Grey whales, which are already facing significant threats such as food scarcity and habitat loss, may suffer further from reckless boating behavior. Current regulations require boats to maintain a distance of at least 100 meters from grey whales to minimize disturbances and potential injuries. The collision underscores the need for increased awareness and adherence to these regulations to ensure both human and marine safety in shared environments.
