For the first time, the faces of Japanese Canadian veterans from the First World War are displayed in Vancouver, thanks to community historian Debbie Jiang, who spent over 15 years uncovering their stories. Many of these soldiers, including retired private Otoji Kamachi, faced systemic racism and were later interned during World War II despite their service. Jiang highlights their sacrifices and the ongoing struggle for recognition, as nearly 200 Japanese Canadians fought in the war, with many awarded for bravery. Kamachi, who survived multiple battles and was injured, later rebuilt his life as a farmer after internment.
