Iran has designated the Royal Canadian Navy as a terrorist organization, citing reciprocity after Canada classified Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity in 2024. This decision aligns with Iranian legislation from 2019, allowing designations against countries supporting U.S. actions against the IRGC. The IRGC, a key military force in Iran, has faced scrutiny for its role in various terrorist activities, including the downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752, which killed 176 people, including 85 Canadians. Despite previous hesitations, Canada moved forward with the designation to address concerns over Iran’s actions and support for terrorism.
