The five-day public inquest into the death of Boden Umpherville commenced at King’s Bench Court in Prince Albert. Umpherville, 40, died after being shocked multiple times with stun guns and struck with batons and knees by police during a traffic stop in 2023. He spent nearly a month on life support before his death. The province’s Serious Incident Response Team has cleared six Prince Albert police officers of any wrongdoing, a determination disputed by Umpherville’s family. Chase Sinclair, a childhood friend of Umpherville, expressed his intention to attend the inquest, where he has standing to question witnesses, including police officers. He emphasized the lack of accountability and expressed concerns about police interactions in general.

Why It Matters

This inquest highlights ongoing concerns about police conduct and accountability, particularly in cases involving the use of force. The Serious Incident Response Team’s clearance of the officers involved raises questions about the standards of accountability in law enforcement. Historically, inquests serve to establish facts surrounding deaths and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents, reflecting broader societal debates about police practices and community safety. In this context, the outcome of the inquest could influence public perception of law enforcement in Canada and may lead to calls for reform in police training and oversight.
