Mountain marmot rides to Calgary-area home

An Airdrie man, Chris Ratzlaff, discovered a hoary marmot in his garage after returning from a hiking trip in Kananaskis Country. Initially alerted by his son about “a creature” in their garage, Ratzlaff learned that the large rodent had been wandering around the neighborhood for about a week, with residents posting sightings on social media. The Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society was contacted, and they sent someone to retrieve the marmot, which will be assessed for health before being returned to its natural habitat. Ratzlaff speculated that the marmot found its way back to the garage in search of its “ride home,” after hitching a ride in his vehicle.

Why It Matters

Marmots, including the hoary marmot, are attracted to vehicles due to the presence of minerals and antifreeze that can be found in engine compartments. This behavior is not unique, as wildlife rehabilitation organizations frequently encounter similar cases, leading to risks for the animals. Alberta is home to two species of marmots: the hoary marmot in alpine areas and the yellow-bellied marmot in drier regions. Awareness about checking vehicles for wildlife, especially after trips to natural habitats, is crucial for preventing harm to both animals and humans.
