Grifols approved plasma donors with disease risk, Health Canada report shows

A recent Health Canada report has revealed serious safety violations at Grifols, a chain of private plasma clinics. The inspection found that the clinics cleared ineligible donors who were at risk for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and operated beyond their capacity. Notably, one location operated without a physician substitute on site during donor assessments. Following the deaths of two individuals in Winnipeg after donating plasma at Grifols, blood safety advocates are urging Health Canada to take stronger action, including suspending Grifols’ license. Since 2018, 25 serious adverse reactions have been reported at Grifols facilities. The report also noted that numerous banned donors were incorrectly deemed eligible, heightening concerns over blood safety.

Why It Matters

This situation raises alarms about blood safety standards in Canada, harkening back to the tainted blood scandal of the 1980s, which infected thousands with HIV and hepatitis C due to improper screening. Health Canada is tasked with ensuring donor eligibility and public safety, and this incident highlights potential gaps in oversight. The errors made by Grifols in donor screening could lead to significant health risks for recipients of plasma products. The historical context of blood safety issues underscores the critical need for rigorous regulatory practices to prevent similar crises from occurring in the future.
