Fort William First Nation, near Thunder Bay, Ont., is mourning the recent loss of five community members, including two from a travel trailer fire currently under investigation. Chief Michele Solomon highlighted the ongoing challenges, including a toxic drug crisis that has prompted a state of emergency and a need for external funding to support treatment facilities. The community faces high opioid-related death rates and lacks adequate policing and housing, exacerbating safety concerns. In response to the tragedies, daily sacred fires and community support sessions are being held to honor the deceased and aid grieving families.
