Feds secure funding for residential school survivors’ counselling travel

Indigenous Services Canada has announced that funding is now available to cover travel costs for residential school survivors and their families to access in-person counselling. This decision follows a previous notification to mental health counsellors that travel costs would no longer be reimbursed through the Indian Residential School Resolution Health Support Program. The newly allocated funding will support travel expenses in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut for both clients and counsellors for the remainder of the fiscal year. While virtual appointments remain funded, many clients in remote areas face challenges with reliable internet and quiet environments for such sessions. Indigenous Services Canada stated that this funding aims to ensure that both in-person and virtual services can continue while a future plan is developed.

Why It Matters

This announcement is significant as it addresses the ongoing mental health needs of residential school survivors, a group that has faced historical trauma due to the legacy of residential schools in Canada. The Indian Residential School system operated from the late 19th century until the 1990s, forcibly removing Indigenous children from their families to assimilate them into Euro-Canadian culture. Access to mental health support is crucial for these individuals, particularly those in remote communities where resources are limited. The commitment to fund travel for counselling underscores the government’s recognition of the unique challenges faced by Indigenous peoples in accessing necessary health services.
