Edmonton hospital offers non-surgical weight loss procedure using medical technology

Mary-Ann Thurber, a 65-year-old from Edmonton, successfully lost 95 pounds through the weight-loss medication Wegovy and an innovative procedure at the Royal Alexandra Hospital called endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty. This minimally invasive technique involves inserting a flexible tube with a camera down the throat to stitch the stomach, effectively reducing its size without extensive surgery. The procedure, which takes about an hour and a half and is covered by Alberta Health Services, allows patients to leave the hospital the same day. Dr. Noah Switzer, a bariatric surgeon at the hospital, highlighted the procedure’s potential to help patients who have benefited from anti-obesity medications but do not want to rely on them long-term. Since December, the hospital has performed ten such procedures, indicating a growing trend in incision-less bariatric surgery.

Why It Matters

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty represents a significant advancement in bariatric surgery, offering a less invasive option for weight management that can complement traditional anti-obesity medications. This procedure is particularly relevant in a healthcare context where obesity and related comorbidities, such as diabetes and hypertension, are rising concerns. Historically, patients seeking weight-loss surgery often faced long wait times for more traditional procedures like gastric bypass. The growing availability of techniques like endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty may improve patient outcomes by providing timely intervention and reducing healthcare costs associated with obesity-related complications.
