Edmonton Marathon issues apology for detour that increased 2026 race distances

Two days after the Edmonton Marathon, race director Tom Keogh issued an apology due to an error that resulted in the marathon and half-marathon courses being measured 674.7 meters longer than expected. This confirmation came after many participants expressed concerns about the race distances. Keogh explained that changes made for a detour at Wellington Bridge were not fully accounted for in the course adjustments. He acknowledged the mistake and stated that the marathon’s results are under review with Athletics Canada, the sport’s national governing body. Some runners, including Calgary’s Mitch Walz, who trained for a qualifying time for the Boston Marathon, felt their efforts were undermined by the miscalculation, with Walz finishing with a chip time of 3:03 instead of the desired 2:59.

Why It Matters

The Edmonton Marathon serves as a qualifying event for prestigious races like the Boston Marathon, making accurate course measurement crucial for participants. Errors in race distance can significantly impact athletes’ qualifying times and overall race experience, leading to emotional distress for those who have invested substantial training and effort. The incident highlights the importance of rigorous course certification processes in marathon events, as inaccuracies can lead to widespread dissatisfaction among runners and damage the reputation of event organizers. Moving forward, the Edmonton Marathon officials have committed to reviewing their measurement protocols to prevent similar issues in the future.
