British Columbia Premier David Eby has not outright rejected Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s proposal to revive the Northern Gateway pipeline, emphasizing his focus on decarbonization over pipeline development. At the Western Premiers’ Conference, Eby noted that while Smith advocates for shipping Alberta oil through B.C., he prefers to maximize the capacity of the existing Trans Mountain Pipeline. Smith, however, believes in the potential of B.C.’s northern coast as an export hub and insists that the Prince Rupert port offers a strategic advantage for accessing Asian markets.
