East Kootenay to Remain on Mountain Daylight Time Year-Round

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) has decided to make mountain daylight time permanent, following a 12-3 vote by the board. This move eliminates the biannual clock changes and aligns the region with Alberta rather than the majority of British Columbia. The decision comes after months of debate sparked by the province’s announcement that most of B.C. would end seasonal time changes, leaving mountain time communities to determine their own schedules. A recent survey indicated that 89% of over 14,000 respondents favored stopping the clock changes, with 66% supporting permanent mountain daylight time. RDEK board chair Rob Gay noted that the survey influenced the decision, as many residents desire more evening daylight for recreational activities.

Why It Matters

This decision reflects a broader trend in North America regarding standardized time observance, as many regions have reconsidered the necessity of biannual clock changes. The RDEK’s choice comes amid a growing movement toward year-round daylight saving time, as seen in other jurisdictions, including Alberta. Historical data demonstrates that communities often experience disruptions due to clock changes, impacting daily routines and safety. As municipalities like RDEK adjust their time observance policies, it can influence neighboring regions, highlighting the interconnectedness of local governments in time regulation discussions.
