The Toronto Blue Jays have placed starting pitcher Dylan Cease on the 15-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain. Manager John Schneider announced this update prior to the team’s series opener against the Miami Marlins at Rogers Centre. Cease exited the game against Pittsburgh on Sunday after pitching 4 2/3 innings, marking only the second time this season he has failed to complete five innings. He holds a 3-3 record with a 3.05 earned-run average in his first year with the Blue Jays after signing a seven-year, $210 million contract. Additionally, slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is out of the lineup with a right elbow contusion, although X-rays showed no fracture. The Blue Jays currently have 13 players on the injured list, including several starting pitchers.

Why It Matters

Dylan Cease’s injury compounds the Blue Jays’ challenges as they contend with a lengthy list of injured players, particularly in their pitching rotation. The team’s depth is being tested, as they currently have 14 players on the injured list, including notable pitchers like Shane Bieber and Max Scherzer. Cease’s performance this season has been significant, as he has consistently made at least 30 starts in the past five seasons, highlighting his durability. With the team sitting third in the American League East with a 25-28 record, maintaining competitive performance becomes crucial as they navigate the challenges of injuries and player availability.
