Patients urged to get hepatitis and HIV tests after dental clinic sterilization issues

Former patients and a former receptionist from Dr. George Chan Dentistry in Brantford, Ontario, are expressing concern after the Grand Erie Public Health (GEPH) department urged individuals to undergo hepatitis and HIV testing. The clinic was shut down on November 3, 2025, following an investigation that revealed 15 sterilization lapses concerning reusable dental instruments. Lyn Portelli, the receptionist who filed the initial complaint that prompted the investigation, described finding improperly stored instruments and expired dental materials. Patients received letters in March 2026 informing them of the potential exposure to infections due to the improper sterilization practices. Although GEPH reported a low overall risk of infection, it recommended that affected patients consult healthcare providers for testing.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights significant public health concerns regarding infection control in dental practices. Proper sterilization of dental instruments is critical in preventing the transmission of bloodborne pathogens such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. Investigations into such lapses are crucial for ensuring patient safety and maintaining trust in healthcare providers. Previous health unit communications regarding potential exposure to infections in dental settings have been rare, underscoring the seriousness of this matter and the potential widespread impact on patients’ health.
