Crime rates decreased in most of Canada in 2025 according to Statistics Canada

Statistics Canada announced a significant decline in crime rates and severity across Canada in 2025. The crime severity index decreased by five percent, marking the second consecutive annual drop, with the index now at 75.01 after peaking at 81.27 over the past eight years. This decline was observed in all provinces and territories except New Brunswick and Nunavut, with many major cities also experiencing reductions. The overall crime rate fell by two percent, with notable decreases in break-and-enter incidents, which dropped by 11 percent for the third consecutive year. Homicides saw a historic 16 percent decrease, bringing the national rate to its lowest since 2014. However, shoplifting rose for the fifth straight year, with incidents up by 11 percent, and hate crimes, though slightly reduced, still reflected a complex trend with certain types increasing.

Why It Matters

The 2025 crime statistics reflect ongoing trends in Canadian law enforcement and public safety. The reduction in the crime severity index and homicide rates illustrates a significant shift compared to the last decade, during which crime rates had generally been rising. Notably, the legislative landscape has also evolved, with the Liberal government introducing tougher crime bills aimed at addressing public concerns surrounding safety. The persistent rise in shoplifting and complexities in hate crimes indicate areas where challenges remain, highlighting the multifaceted nature of crime in Canada and the need for continued efforts in law enforcement and community support.
