Court approves class action against McGill for failing to protect Jewish students

The Superior Court of Quebec has approved a class-action lawsuit against McGill University, initiated by undergraduate student David Cobrin on behalf of Jewish students. The lawsuit alleges that the university failed to adequately protect these students from discrimination following the events of October 7, 2023. Judge Dominique Poulin indicated in her 16-page ruling that the situation at McGill was “exceptional and complex,” noting serious allegations of antisemitic and anti-Zionist rhetoric on campus. The class action encompasses all Jewish students at McGill, including those in various academic programs, who were enrolled from October 8, 2023, until the public notice of the judgment. The lawsuit claims that Jewish students experienced harassment, intimidation, and assault during protests related to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Why It Matters

This lawsuit highlights ongoing concerns regarding antisemitism on university campuses, particularly in the context of heightened tensions related to the Israel-Palestine conflict. The events of October 2023 have intensified discussions around the safety and treatment of Jewish students in academic settings. Reports of systemic antisemitism in universities have become more prevalent, prompting legal actions and policy reviews across multiple institutions. Class-action lawsuits like this one aim to address perceived failures of universities in providing a safe and inclusive environment for all students, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds.
